Midjourney — best overall
Midjourney is the tool every other generator on this list gets measured against. V8.1 became the default model on June 11, 2026; per Midjourney's release notes it renders in about 4 seconds at standard quality and 12 seconds in HD, which outputs at four times the resolution of V7. Prompt adherence and text rendering, its two historical weaknesses, both improved noticeably in the V8 series. Draft mode generates 24 low-res candidates per prompt for cheap exploration, and Niji 7 covers anime specifically.
What keeps it on top is control, not just quality. Style references (--sref), personalization profiles, and moodboards let you lock an aesthetic and reproduce it across hundreds of images, something ChatGPT and Gemini still can't do reliably. The Basic plan is $10/mo for 3.3 hours of fast GPU time; Standard at $30/mo adds unlimited slower "relax" generations, and annual billing cuts 20% off everything.
The trade-offs are real: there is no free tier, your images are public unless you pay $60/mo for Pro's Stealth Mode, companies over $1M in annual revenue are required to buy Pro or Mega, and there is still no official API.
- Best-in-class aesthetics; V8.1 renders standard images in ~4 seconds
- Deep style control: --sref, personalization, moodboards, draft mode
- Unlimited relaxed generations from the $30/mo Standard plan
- Dedicated anime model (Niji 7)
- No free tier at all
- Images are public unless you pay $60/mo for Stealth Mode
- No official API; web and Discord only
Choose Midjourney you want the best-looking images and consistent style control, and can live without a free tier.
